10 Mindset Hacks to Quit Drinking

Updated: Jul 21, 2021

I compiled the top ten mindset hacks to make a life change- like quit drinking. I'm sure you've heard these before but they are so good they are worth repeating. You could use them to quit drinking, start a new business, write a book, run a marathon- really anything! Just sprinkle and apply as needed.

  1. It’s never too late to start. You are not too old, and it is not too late. Just begin. The famous (and sober) ultramarathoner Rich Roll has a famous quote: I didn't reach my athletic peak until I was 43. I didn't write my first book until I was 44. I didn't start my podcast until I was 45. At 30, I thought my life was over. At 52 I know it's just beginning. Keep running. Never give up. And watch your kite soar.

  2. You’re not always going to be motivated. If you wait to be motivated, you may be waiting forever. Act first and motivation will follow. Identify what that action step is and do it today.

  3. Comparison is the thief of joy. Never compare your beginning to someone else's middle.

  4. Learn from mistakes. Mistakes happen and that is ok. Take time to reflect and learn from them.

  5. Someone else’s best practices might not be the best practice for you. You are unique. There is no one way to do something. Glean what you can from others but learn what works best for you.

  6. You are not alone. There are others out there going through what you are. Find them and lean on them.

  7. One choice at a time. Instead of focusing on the big goal break it down moment by moment. Choice by choice.

  8. Get curious. Become a scientist and really examine what you are doing and why you are doing it. Awareness is key to making any life change.

  9. Data not drama. Avoid tying emotion to events and facts. The fact is you might have had a drink. That does not mean you are a failure or horrible. You simply ingested a substance. Remove the shame and blame and move on.

  10. Practice not perfection. You don’t have to be perfect. When you set out to learn a new language you don’t expect to learn it after one day of studying the language. It is going to take multiple study session to learn the language. It’s the same thing when you are making any life change.
